To address intercooling there are a number of kits out that relocate the intercooler and some conversions that go water to air. Id like to make a case to Subaru to do both and I have a simple cost effective way to accomplish this.
Run the water to air system off the engine coolant. Using a radiator with more frontal area as radiators are already very efficient and most of the heat transfer is done within an inch or so (at least with slow moving cars and airflow). next run the air to water intercooler just off the turbo, you wont need a very big one (think lotus Esprit or even a little smaller). There after run it to the top mount intercooler and back to the engine. Run a high pressure water pump and divert a small amount of water off the cool side to the intercooler. Of course this will require a new water pump design but that's a one day deal for a subaru engineer (three days if they got their knowledge from school) and will require new molds and reprocessing of water pump production. The trick to getting the water back into the radiator is in the intercooler design, the cooling pipes need to be one way only, more over the intercooler should produce outflowing water with far hotter temps than the engine requiring a convergent system to equalize the temps. That brings us to the part where money hits ideas, i've designed my share of thermo/ fluid dynamic machinery I can tell you that getting it to work properly is the other 90%, not too big of a deal for a company with a full time development team. The huge upside is an excellent inexpensive system running colder than anything out there and solving more than turbocharger outlet temps. In my time benchmarking cars I've become a fan of the WRX and am looking into a purchase or lease. I think Subaru is making a dangerous decision in expanding its line while ignoring the WRX and the fan base this model created. I would explain that the sales of the other models are a byproduct of such a following and the envy of every single automobile manufacturer. Foster this model! keep it up to date and inexpensive, you have inadvertently created a following that no other company currently enjoys why destroy it.

Everyone is so enamoured with modern fighter jets, they shouldnt be the pinicle of fighter jet design was reached in the 70's, 1976 to be exact as that was the year the f-15 entered service. What matters is that it is still (2018) an air supiriority machine used world wide including the united stated with little to contest it. Everytime a new fighter comes out somewhere the F-15 is used as a benchmark. You may be reading this and thinking F-22, SU 27 variant, Eurofighter..etc. The modern versions of the F-15 will still fight as well as any out there including the F-22 which should be labeled a missle camand more than a fighter. While stealth was the big deal in the 90s, today there are numerous ways to detect stealth aircraft, that gets us back to the eagle. F-15 vs F22: With thrust vectoring nozzles and powerful engines to give it the ability to super cruse ( Mach 1.5 without afterburners), modern avionics and the ability to carry its loads internally the F-22 should beat the eagle and anything else in real combat into dust. It only does that on paper, in experience the F-15 holds its own, its still one of the fastest planes ever made able to blaze to Mach 2.5 (1976). The newer variants have been modernized from avionics to weaponry which it carries far more of than the F-22 can carry in stealth mode. Finally the that part kills the F-22 for me... its per operational plane cost of $356,000,000. Thats a little lower than most projections, this isn't just a case of a better fighter plane but one of stupidity as well. The united states went from being an aerospace brain power to burning cash to better everyone. Congratulations your $365 million dollar aircraft is better that the Russian $40 million dollar one..good job. We can do better with far less in this country. F-15 vs SU 27+Variants: I have to hand it to the Russians with far less money, they have turned the SU 27 from an answer to the F-15 to a world class fighter plane in later variants, I wasn't fan but the Russian plane is so good that Ive reluctantly turned. In this case the Eagle wins the fight first in a way only war czars can love. Its modern avionics connect to a global system which can send missiles to destroy long before Su pilots even know its coming. Id like to invite one pilot from each country to fly active military versions of each plane in this case the F-15 will come out the winner again, Its still the super jet hard accelerating rocket with wings. While the Russians like to show maneuverability the eagle has literally demonstrated its ability to fly without a wing, its heavier but somehow the hotrod of the fighter world. Taking hits and flying away without a wing is the ultimate trump card in the fighter world. Lets see the any Su do that after taking a missile strike. F-15 vs Eurofighter: The Eurofighter is filled with hard hitting technological advancement, its truly Impressive especially considering what the consortium has done to it. It was supposed to be Europe superiority fighter plane, It was developed at the same time as the F-22, but has no stealth, thrust vectoring and feels like the bigger better version of the F-16....Its not. Its core mission seems be one of providing jobs. In assembling a consortium of countries, each one in the group had wishes they added, what would have been the ultimate fighter plane has turned into a multi role combat aircraft. Isn't that what the F-15 E is? The modern F-15 is everything the Eurofighter is, and don't kid yourself In a fast high flying dog fight the Eagle will out maneuver the Eurofighter, in slower fight the eagles advantage is more one sided, on top of that the eagle is cheaper by some $20,000,000 at its most expensive spec. I could go on about stats in weight, thrust and so on, but the Eagle has been tested so many times in real combat doing exactly what the Eurofighter is suppose to do. The F-15 is a design originating in 1967, were talking slide rulers and in those days supercomputers were literally calculators. This isnt the best of Europe the initial core design of a single purpose fighter would have beaten every fighter in the world and brought an onslaught of missile development to combat it. |
